Observation Narrative
Plot is in the most open section of dry scrubby forest/woodland embracing the mid to lower slope portion of a steep south- to southwest-facing slope. The soil surface is largely covered by gravel-sized fragments of Elbrook dolomite. The herbaceous layer is rather sparse and forbs rather than grasses predominate. The rare plants present in this community would benefit greatly from prescribed burning, releasing them from woody species suppression.
No recent disturbances, though probably cleared and possibly grazed long ago. A major deer trail is in the plot and there are significant deer browse impacts, especially to Liatris aspera.
